Pedal of Doom is the signature pedal developed by Ashdown for Geezer Butler , historic bassist of Black Sabbath .
Ashdown is constantly asking the question of what a great bass distortion needs to be to get a usable tone. It's basically all about an EQ, a predetermined structure to drive the right frequencies for the right track, to cut them, boost them and get a sound full of depth.
For this they looked no further than Geezer Butler and the use of dynamics in his songs, which resonate today as much as when they were recorded.
A very clear example of control and management of dynamics can be found in the groove of "Hand of Doom" by Black Sabbath with Geezer and Bill Ward who dialogue with profound changes of character making that song the masterpiece it still is today.
What if you could control the pre-EQ of each drive with a 5-band active EQ?
This gives you two separate tones with two individual drives that can be engaged at the desired time to give the rich harmonics the boost they need.
Featuring a transformer-isolated Di output, with two switchable equalizers.
Dual VU meters designed to ensure the bass signal is balanced at the input and output of the signal path. Using the input meter allows you to drive the EQ to the desired level base on the output of the instrument. The output meter ensures that the signal returning to the amplifier is the same as the input, to avoid unwanted gain jumps, or vice versa to ensure a gain increase when necessary.
Naturally, the need to drive these sounds with rich harmonic distortion was the base need for this pedal, with the ability to adjust just the right amount of gain for those moments that call for a doom-like sound, switchable when needed.
