The electronic drum kit
Electronic drum kits come with an amplification system and can be connected to a computer or audio device for greater flexibility in recording and performing.
Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of electronic drums:
Advantages:
- Sound: Electronic drums can produce a wide range of sounds, from traditional acoustic sounds to modern synthetic sounds.
- Volume: Electronic drums can be played at a lower volume than acoustic drums, making them more suitable for home use and in situations where space is limited.
- Recording: Electronic drums can be connected to a computer or audio device for recording and playback of sounds.
- Convenience: Electronic drums can be easily transported and set up, compared to acoustic drums.
- Personalization: Electronic drums can be programmed with different sounds and rhythms, allowing you to personalize your playing experience.
Disadvantages:
- Sound: Electronic drums can sound less warm and natural than acoustic drums.
- Cost: Electronic drum kits can be more expensive than acoustic drum kits.
- Maintenance: Electronic drums may require more maintenance than acoustic drums.
- Electricity Dependency: E-batteries are dependent on electricity, so they cannot be used in blackouts or places without electricity.
- Less authenticity: Electronic drums can lack authenticity compared to acoustic drums, especially for musicians looking for a traditional sound.
In general, electronic drums can be an ideal choice for musicians looking for flexibility and versatility in recording and performing, but acoustic drums are still the preferred choice for many musicians due to their warm, natural sound.
The story
In the 80s brands like Yamaha, roland and others began to produce rubber pads containing triggers (sensors) that could communicate with a sound module. The pad reproduced through percussion a sound previously sampled from an acoustic instrument and recorded in the sound module. Originally the electronic drum was used mostly in electronic music, we remember groups like Duran Duran, Rush etc. who made extensive use of it, but later also rock drummers began to approach this instrument.
In 1997, Roland revolutionized the market with the production of the v-drum by introducing a product with mesh skins instead of the rubber previously used for the pad and no sampled sounds, but mathematical models capable of reproducing and generating sounds.
