Radial J48 Stereo is a high-performance active direct box designed for professional touring and the recording studio. It features the same award-winning signal path that made the single-channel J48 the most touring active direct box available. And with users as diverse as Paul McCartney, Tommy Emmanuel and Joe Chiccarelli, you can be sure it will meet the most demanding requirements.
The design starts with a 14-gauge steel frame and a sturdy book-end design that protects the switches and connectors. Internal I-beam construction ensures the circuit board is not twisted, reducing the possibility of solder joints peeling and possible failure. All connectors are made of glass-filled nylon and have large, tarnish-proof nickel-silver contacts.
Inside, a proprietary power supply converts 48 volts of phantom power to AC for increased headroom, resulting in improved signal handling and reduced distortion. This results in an extremely linear frequency response from 10Hz to 40kHz and the ability to handle high-output instruments without a hitch. Additionally, a -15dB pad can be engaged to handle extreme signal levels. There’s also a high-pass filter that gently attenuates low frequencies below 80Hz to clean up muddy sounds and excessive resonance. A 180º polarity reversal will help when using the J48 Stereo’s dual-element pickups to phase-align sources or eliminate acoustic hot spots that can cause feedback on stage.
A unique aspect of the power supply is the way the J48 handles hum and buzz caused by ground loops. The traditional solution is to lift the audio ground by disconnecting pin 1 on the XLR output, but doing so turns off the 48 volt phantom power from the console, forcing a battery into the system. Unfortunately, batteries are inconsistent, and when they begin to discharge, they severely impact the available voltage and resulting headroom. Instead, the J48 employs a DC-DC converter with a high-frequency transformer that allows the audio ground to be removed from the power supply. This does not turn off the phantom power and is invisible to the user.
