Ten years ago, KORG launched the Stage line of digital pianos with great success. Vintage, characterised by the clever combination of an extended control panel, a Keybed high quality, and a sound database Vintage of great value. These elements combined with the high class of acoustic pianos, the warmth and response of the effects typical of the 70s, and the refined design, have inspired musicians around the world for over a decade.
SV-2 latest addition to the Stage series Vintage is available in two models, 88 and 73-key versions, and two additional models always 88 and 73 keys equipped with an efficient internal K-ARRAY amplification system. These instruments use the latest KORG technological resources characterized by a large amount of memory, wide polyphony, a large number of Presets, extensive control possibilities, and extremely advanced performance; ultimately everything you could want in a professional Stage digital piano.
The SV-2 has ten times the Sample memory of the previous series, which has allowed the implementation of much more accurate and detailed sounds. The piano has 72 exciting sounds, with 64 FAVORITE locations to be able to select them immediately during a performance; the polyphony is 128 voices, and allows for much more efficient management of Split and Layer sounds; which can now also be created directly by users, thanks to a dedicated computer Editor. Each Program can use up to 3 Sounds, such as: a Split with Piano and Bass, plus a Layer with Strings. While the User Splits must be created via the editor, the Split point can be set directly from the main panel.
The SV-2 represents the pinnacle of KORG's current sampling techniques and careful editing, aimed at creating the most realistic and expressive timbres for all of its sounds.
To create the Samples, only original instruments in perfect working conditions were used, using multi-microphone recording techniques to capture the greatest possible number of nuances. Different dynamic levels were sampled in order to reproduce all their dynamic-timbral variations: from pianissimo (ppp) more delicate, to the fortissimo (fff) more incisive. Thanks to technology RX KORG also made it possible to use elements peculiar to each sound such as: the “Slap” of the slats of electric pianos, the noise of the key release in acoustic pianos, or the Click of the organ contacts. The use of these characteristics of the original instruments has allowed us to achieve very high results in terms of realism, while at the same time giving the sound an almost three-dimensional presence, with its precise positioning in space and in the final mix.
The SV-2 offers a remarkable quantity of classical keyboard instruments of great value: electromechanical, transistor, tape, analog and digital, reproduced with extraordinary realism; these sounds have characterized decades of pop and rock music and are still in great demand and used, the SV-2 offers them in perfect condition and without the need for maintenance. There are practically all the most famous American electric pianos: lamella and reed, the most famous and appreciated Japanese Grand, a rare German electric piano, and the characteristic sound of the Clavinet with all its most typical settings. What can we say about the electronic pianos available in the most varied versions: analog, digital, VPM, FM and sampled, including the unmistakable and popular KORG M1 piano; not to mention the organs, with a wide selection of sounds "Tone Wheel” more typical, to the VOX Combo, to the typical Italian transistor organ of the 60s, to the American valves, and the peculiar sounds of the pipe organ. In such a carefully structured database, string sounds cannot be missing: from the classic Strings Machine Vintage analog from the 70s, to the most typical sounds of the famous magnetic tape keyboard, to a realistic orchestral section masterfully sampled. The SV-2 also features Mallet, Brass, choirs, guitars, basses, even Lead Synt sounds for solos or Pads, ideal for being combined in Layer or Split.
The real character of the SV-2 is that of an extraordinary Stage Piano, where with just one button you can recall the grand piano sounds of the most famous and renowned manufacturers in the world: German, Italian, Austrian and Japanese. When the musical repertoire requires it, you can also use the sounds of upright pianos (Japanese or German), or a real Honky-Tonk piano or an authentic Tack Piano; the series of classic keyboard sounds is completed by two splendid harpsichords, one French and one Italian. Played alone, or in various Split or Layer combinations, these sounds constitute the base foundation of this instrument, and at the same time allow it great versatility of use.
The SV-2’s familiar yet intuitive user interface is an invitation to take control of your sound; there’s no LCD display or menu to get lost in. The large front panel always lets you adjust the settings by simply turning the knobs; pressing them restores the original value, which is a great feature if you change your mind! LED switches constantly display the activation of effects or other important parameters such as Transpose. Sounds can be selected via a pair of rotary encoders, while 8 backlit FAVORITE buttons quickly recall 64 custom presets. The SV-2 also features a handy lock function, which prevents accidental activation of sounds or effects, which can happen by inadvertently touching the panel during a performance; or it can prevent anyone from changing the settings by unauthorized persons. The free SV-2 Editor Software finally gives you even more in-depth and detailed control over your sounds.
The free SV-2 editor (available for PC/Mac) greatly expands the wide range of functions provided directly by the instrument, allowing you to intervene in a more detailed and easy way on the editing of sounds, organizing them, cataloging them, and archiving them in a personal way, also allowing access to many other sounds not available directly on the main panel. Finally, this application simplifies and speeds up the settings of FAVORITE in Split/Layer and their saving in memory, allows you to load additional sound libraries released by KORG, and facilitates the exchange of personal sounds between various SV-2 users.
On all models of the SV-2 Stage line Vintage The renowned KORG RH3 Graded-Hammer Action keyboard is used, which accurately reproduces the mechanics of a grand piano, extremely sensitive, able to faithfully reproduce every expressive element of the performance; and as on a real grand piano, the weighting of the keys is graduated: the hammers are larger and heavier in the low register and gradually lighter moving towards the high register. Eight different dynamic curves allow you to adapt the response of the sound generator to your personal playing technique and style, while eight different tuning curves: Grand Piano Stretch, Electric Piano Stretch, Electric Grand, Upright Stretch, Detuned and 2 User Curves configurable via the editor, further increase the quality of the simulation. The overall tuning of the SV-2 can be set as desired depending on your musical needs, to accompany various instruments or singers; and of course the instrument can be transposed into any key.
The ability to add the most appropriate effects gives each sound Vintage of the SV-2 an even more real character, increasing the effectiveness in simulating the original instruments. The SV-2 has 6 different DSP (Digital Signal Processing) steps of the signal, where all the effects are realized with KORG's sophisticated physical modeling technology, capable of accurately reproducing the tonal character, the behavior and even the defects of the original effect:
All the effects are immediate to activate and adjust, and make it easier to find new sounds both Vintage that modern. The processing chain is finally completed by the exclusive KORG Valve Reactor tube circuit, which uses a real 12AX7A tube, capable of providing all the warmth and distinctive timbre of this particular technology.
The model SV-2S is equipped with an internal amplification system that allows you to use and appreciate the instrument truly anywhere. The KORG staff worked closely with K-ARRAY, one of the most well-known and renowned Italian companies in the production of advanced professional PA Systems, to create the speaker system integrated on the SV-2S. With its 15 Watts x 2 of power, 2 x 2.5’’ speakers and a 3’’ passive radiator, it allows you to use the piano autonomously and in any condition: from backstage to rehearsal room, from the theater, to the concert hall, or at home. The SV-2S is also available in 73 and 88-key versions and has an exclusive ivory color finish, with elegant and characteristic grilles for the amplification with a fabric finish.
The SV-2 is equipped with a complete set of connections: audio, data or controls that can fully satisfy the needs of modern musicians. The main Left/Right Audio outputs are balanced with XLR connectors, to connect directly to a studio or stage console without the need for D.I. Additional boxes; there is also an additional pair of unbalanced L/R outputs, with 1/4'' Jack connectors. There are also 2 very useful inputs (Input) with 1/4''’ Jack connectors, to directly connect an external sound source such as a computer or a Synth to the piano. Naturally, there is a headphone jack, useful for personal monitoring on stage, for studying, and for practicing. The Standard MIDI IN and MIDI Out jacks allow connection with other MIDI instruments; while the USB port guarantees data exchange between the SV-2 and the computer. It is possible to use up to 3 different pedals: Damper, Pedal 1 and Pedal 2. The DS-2H Damper pedal is supplied and supports the “Half-Pedaling” function. Pedal 1 supports a Switch type pedal, which can function as a “Sostenuto” pedal or as a Fast/Slow switch when the Rotary effect is active. Pedal 2 acts as a Continuous Control pedal, useful for adjusting parameters such as Volume/Expression, Wah, or even as a “Una Corda” pedal, particularly useful for piano sound purists.
