Nine different sound generators with great timbral versatility

NAUTILUS It has nine different sound engines, each specialized in the reproduction or synthesis of a specific timbre family. Starting from SGX-2 which generates a wide choice of acoustic pianos drawing from a vast PCM library without Loop, with all their nuances, even the smallest ones, divided into 12 Velocity levels, with string resonance, release noise, etc. EP-1 which realistically reproduces the timbres of the most famous electric piano models with plates and reeds. CX-3 whichemulates the unmistakable tone of Tone Wheel organs including the characteristic Rotary Speakers amplifier. Added to these are the synthesis modules MOD-7: VPM / FM, PolysixEX And MS-20EX for analog modeling and STR-1 for physical modeling. Used individually as Programs or combined together in Combinations, these Sound Engines are capable of producing all types of sounds from those Vintage to the more modern or futuristic ones.

SST Smooth Sound Transition seamlessly transitions between sounds

On NAUTILUS the selection of the various operating modes or the musical resources within them does not cause any interruption of the sound. It is possible to recall Program, or Combi, or switch from Program to Combi mode, or even switch between Songs on the Sequencer, always maintaining the sound tails and effects during the changes with a smooth transition without interruptions. A feature that is widely appreciated and praised by all musicians.

Sound library organized into three main categories

For the timbre selection on NAUTILUS a completely new approach has been applied, putting aside every preconception and convention regarding Workstations, and thus devising a new type of classification capable of overcoming the boundaries of sampling and Sound Design. On NAUTILUS The sounds are divided into three main groups.

Exclusive Sounds

In this category NAUTILUS offers exclusive and particular sounds such as: Loop with musical phrases, prepared pianos, original percussions and much more. Musical phrases characteristic of rare instruments, difficult to find and play, have been created and inserted into the internal sound library, freely usable in your musical pieces; and other unusual timbres such as the piano “prepared” that is, from the modified timbre, obtained by inserting screws, pieces of wood and other objects between the strings with very suggestive results; or percussion sounds created using ordinary objects such as kitchen utensils or others. These sounds can give original colors to your compositions or arrangements, also representing a precious resource for musicians who create soundtracks and music for images.

Modern Sounds

NAUTILUS has the most up-to-date sounds suitable for the current music scene for genres such as: EDM, Electro, and Chiptune; with the most modern sounds of Synth, Drum Kit, with special effects that also facilitate the creation of effective Beats and Grooves for Dance. The over 50 Drum Kits of this instrument offer a great variety of percussive sounds able to adequately represent the rhythmic evolution in the musical styles of the last decades.

Standard Sounds

On NAUTILUS, all the sounds of the main timbre families, essential in a Workstation, have been carefully selected and inserted: acoustic pianos, electric pianos, guitars, basses and others, covering all genres. In the new acoustic piano sounds, the acoustics of the recording room have also been sampled, with the possibility of mixing the direct sound with the environment in a personal way; and a new electric piano model has also been added with a characteristic full-bodied timbre, particularly suitable for Funky.

Real-time dynamics management with the DYNAMICS knob

Using the DYNAMICS knob you can control the variations in timbre and volume introduced by the Speed keyboard, and make sure that these match the style required by the song at the time. By rotating this knob you can obtain a completely different feeling, even using the same sound. This is also another method to adapt the instrument to your performance needs. By playing the keyboard and rotating the “Dynamics” knob to the left, you obtain a softer sound, with a wider dynamic range, this allows delicate and expressive passages, ideal for accompanying singers or solo instruments. By rotating the knob to the right, the dynamic response becomes more energetic and uniform; particularly useful when playing in a band or orchestra to make a timbre stand out more, such as in a solo.

Real-time parameter modification with RT Controls

The six RT (Real Time) knobs at the top left of the panel allow direct editing of PROGRAM and COMBI. Each knob can be assigned a variety of functions, such as editing the timbre with: Filter Cut Off, the effect level; controlling the arpeggiator or Drum Track with the Gate, the tempo speed, Swing, the Snare type and much more. In COMBI mode it is possible to group several timbres, and control their volume with a single knob. Furthermore, to avoid that these can be accidentally modified during a Performance, it is possible to press them, making them completely retract into the panel, thus locking their position. In this way, it is also possible to select only the ones used most often, hiding the others.

New graphical interface even more intuitive

For NAUTILUS KORG has redesigned the user interface to allow you to obtain the best result in the shortest time possible, normally the addition of functions tends to increase the presence of physical controls on the panel, in this case instead the path of rationalizing and optimizing as much as possible the operational speed and intuitiveness has been followed. The MODE key displays the selection of operating modes on a single screen: PROGRAM, COMBI, SET LIST, SAMPLING, SEQUENCE and GLOBAL. On each MODE access to the functions is obtained via TABS, while the PAGE keys allow more in-depth modifications with intuitive procedures. This navigation system allows you to always return to the initial phase by simply pressing the MODE key. The display works in mode Dark, which uses black as the main color to reduce eye strain. There are also 6 programmable shortcut keys, which can be assigned to a variety of functions such as: selecting Program and Combi modes, transport keys for the Sequencer, etc. There are 4 different ready-to-use Templates available, but you can create and save your own settings.

TouchView color display

The nerve center of the NAUTILUS user interface is the large color display (800 x 480 pixels) WVGA TouchView; with which you can directly select or modify a sound or a parameter with the simple touch of a finger thanks to the Touch Drag. A series of graphical and interactive tools are also available to facilitate programming, such as adjusting the opening of the grand piano lid on SGX-2, or connecting virtual patch cables on the MS-20EX. There is a very useful search function on the Display to find and recall musical resources in base to the characters stored in their name.

Polyphonic Arpeggiator and Drum Track

These modules provide effective interactive musical support for each performance, with a large library of rhythmic and melodic Patterns; there are also 4 different scenes available on which you can set and instantly recall different Patterns; ideal for improvising, for Performances, or for quickly creating songs or complete arrangements on the Sequencer.

Set List Mode Essential for Live Performances

The NAUTILUS SET LIST mode allows you to organize your sound resources in a personal way. Each SET LIST is composed of a fundamental unit called SLOT; in each SET LIST there are 128 SLOTS, and 128 SET LISTS are immediately available. Each SLOT can be given a name, and a musical resource can be assigned in base to your needs: PROGRAM, COMBI, or SONG. From this you can also control parameters such as the volume of the selected resource, display text, or color it appropriately to highlight it within the list; each SLOT can also be moved and positioned at the desired point, or copied or deleted. This operating mode can meet any Live need, thanks to the possibility of programming the exact succession of musical resources that we need. Finally, each SET LIST has a 9-band graphic equalizer, placed at the end of the audio chain and independent of the effects section, with which to modify or correct the global timbre response of NAUTILUS depending on the environment in which the Performance takes place.

Open Sampling System

NAUTILUS uses the KORG Open Sampling System, to quickly sample an external audio source, or resample a Performance played on NAUTILUS, regardless of the operating mode selected. The timbral possibilities offered by the instrument's vast internal Sample library are greatly expanded by the SAMPLE USER, which thanks to technology VMT (Virtual Memory Technology), allows you to use personal samples by making the most of the capacity of the Workstation's SSD. Via the USB port, you can load Sample in various formats: AIFF, WAV, SoundFont 2.0 and AKAI S1000/3000; in case the amount of data is really relevant it is also possible to use a high-speed USB Ethernet adapter. On NAUTILUS it is therefore possible to use Samples created on a computer for your compositions, arrangements or productions.

Sequencer 16 MIDI & Audio Tracks Full Edit

NAUTILUS has a powerful Sequencer/Recorder with 16 MIDI tracks and 16 Audio tracks; an important resource for musical creations or personal arrangements; this section has functions that facilitate and stimulate musical inspiration, with the possibility of recording polyphonic arpeggiators, Drum Tracks or RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play/Recording), with professional quality results in a short time. The 16-track Audio Recorder acquires up to 4 tracks simultaneously in 16 bit/24 bit 48 kHz format. During their Playback it is possible to add effects, resample the result obtained and import the Wav file into a Sequencer track. There are also Editing functions such as: Copy, Paste, Normalize, and mix automation.

Up to 16 simultaneous effects processors

NAUTILUS can produce up to 16 effects simultaneously, selectable from 197 different types, divided into 3 categories: Insert, Master and Total FX. Insert effects are applied to single or multiple timbres of the Timbres/Tracks of a Combi or the Sequencer. The effects Masters 1&2 can be dosed for all tracks with the relative sends (Send 1&2), while the Total effects act globally on the entire instrument. In addition, for each timbre, MIDI and Audio track of the Sequencer, a three-band equalizer is available to correct tonal balances or to modify the sound in a creative way.

Control surfaces can be connected to the USB/MIDI ports

NAUTILUS can be connected directly to any Class-Compliant USB/MIDI controller, such as controllers MIDI USB KORG with Pads such as: nanoPAD, nanoPAD2, padKONTROL with these you can play for example percussion parts, or trigger chords in Chord mode.

NAUTILUS is available in 3 models: 88 keys with RH3 weighted keyboard, 73 and 61 with semi-weighted keys

NAUTILUS 88 keys adopts a RH3 (Real Hammer) Keybed, with gradual weighting between the low and high areas of the keyboard, fromaction solid and fluid, ideal for playing acoustic and electric piano parts. The 73 and 61 key models instead use a high quality semi-weighted Synth keyboard; with a range of 6 and 5 octaves respectively. These types of Keybed make it easier to perform organ techniques such as glissando, Slap, or the Synth solos.

Free Music Software Bundle

NAUTILUS It comes bundled with a wide range of music software including: Izotope's "Ozone Elements" AI-based mastering software, "Skoove" instructional application for improving your keyboard skills, "Lite Reason" DAW software, as well as various synth software from KORG and other brands. Nine synthesis systems combined in one instrument

NAUTILUS integrates 9 distinct sound synthesis systems into a single instrument; the advanced technology used allows them to share the same hardware platform in a stable and reliable way, with truly impressive timbral results.

  • SGX-2 (Premium Piano) -Faithfully reproduces the sounds of famous grand pianos such as the German piano, on which it is possible to mix the environment in which it was recorded; or the Italian Grand, an instrument of great renown. The SGX-2 captures every nuance of the acoustic piano with 12 dynamic levels, string resonance, release noises and more, allowing the player maximum expression.
  • *String ResonanceWith the Damper pedal depressed, all the strings of the piano are free to resonate. When you play a key, the strings closest to the original key begin to vibrate by sympathetic resonance. The SGX-2 accurately recreates this phenomenon, adding an extra layer of realism.* The harmonics generated by the resonance of the strings are displayed on a special screen on the display
  • EP-1 (MDS Electric Piano) -Replicates 8 different famous electric piano models, the last of which was added because of its peculiar sound, particularly suited to Funk. The EP-1 uses KORG's proprietary technology: MDS (Multi-Dimensional Synthesis) capable of eliminating the perception of the transitions between the velocity levels of the Samples, and the unnatural behavior of the Loops. In this way, the nuances are more fluid and natural, with a much wider dynamic range than that normally obtained with a digital sound generator. The sounds are also processed by physical modeling effects that faithfully simulate the amplifiers, cabinets, speakers and effects of the Vintage most typical used on these instruments; all elements that give a further contribution in terms of realism in the simulation of these instruments.
  • CX-3 Tonewheel Organ -The original KORG CX-3 Combo organ dates back to 1980, appreciated by many musicians around the world, this instrument was re-proposed by KORG in 2000 with the same name, but with a completely different, more up-to-date technology. In NAUTILUS the CX-3 Sound Engine faithfully emulates the Tone wheel organ; this proprietary technology has been used to faithfully reproduce the complex electromagnetic generation system, the tube timbre, typical effects such as Vibrato/Chorus, or the inevitable Rotary Speaker, with 7 different selectable models, with the rotation speed controlled by the Joystick. Other typical characteristics of this category of instruments are also accurately reproduced, such as: instability, Fold-Back, Leakage, and the noise of the tone wheels, to obtain a higher level of realism.
  • HD-1 (High Definition Synthesizer) PCM - The HD-1 is a powerful High Definition sound generation system based on PCM samples, with oscillators with a wide frequency response and low aliasing, multimode filters with resonance, envelopes and extremely fast and smooth LFOs. The technology used on NAUTILUS has allowed us to overcome the limits normally imposed on Workstations by the size of the RAM memory, allowing the implementation of a vast PCM database capable of competing with the most advanced PC-based systems. All the Samples of this instrument, as is KORG tradition, have been carefully created and selected by a qualified team of international Sound Designers, thanks to whom we have been able to obtain the maximum in terms of technical and musical quality.
  • MS-20EX (Legacy Analog Collection) Analog modeling - This Sound Engine uses KORG’s proprietary CMT (Component Modeling Technology), which faithfully reproduces the sound and performance capabilities of the MS-20, a semi-modular analog synthesizer introduced by KORG in 1978, featuring a full-bodied sound, crisp filters, and extensive patching capabilities. The MS-20EX greatly expands the capabilities of the original model, making it possible to modulate filters with velocity, transform audio inputs into control signals, and modify the original parameters with modulation sources including envelopes, LFOs, and Real-Time control, all with ample polyphony.
  • PolysixEX (Legacy Analog Collection) Analog modeling - PolysixEX offers a faithful virtual re-edition of the Polisix, another classic KORG synth, introduced in 1981, which had many cutting-edge features at the time: 6-voice polyphony, a characteristic 4-pole LP filter with self-oscillation, an oscillator with a sub oscillator with an unmistakable sound, which was integrated with a Chorus/Ensemble effect, and an arpeggiator; furthermore, this instrument was one of the very few to have programmable memories, and a truly advantageous price. PolysixEX is able to reproduce the timbres and character of this instrument, particularly effective and appreciable in the Pads, and in the Strings, obviously with a polyphony no longer limited to just 6 voices.
  • AL-1 (Analog Synthesizer) Analog Modeling - The AL-1 is the same renowned analog modeling sound engine first implemented in the KORG OASYS (Open Architecture Synthesis Studio) in 2005. It is a sound engine with extensive synthesis capabilities and very low aliasing, capable of producing the smooth, enveloping sound typical of subtractive synthesis, while at the same time creating extremely innovative sounds, impossible to reproduce with synthesizers. Vintage.
  • MOD-7 (Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer) VPM/FM synthesis - It is mainly based on the VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) technology, introduced by KORG with two classic instruments: the Prophecy in 1995, and the Z1 in 1997. On the MOD-7 the traditional PCM synthesis chain, with filters, envelopes etc., is combined with VPM, Ring Modulation, Subtractive Synthesis, and a complete Patching system, worthy of the most famous modular synths, so versatile that it can even directly import the FM sounds of the Synths. Vintage of the DX series, in addition to producing extremely original and dynamic sounds.
  • STR-1 (Plucked Strings) Physical model - The STR-1 uses cutting-edge technology based on the physical modeling of plucked and struck strings, the result of years of research by KORG's development teams. To generate the sound, all the distinctive elements of a string and its excitation are simulated: length, thickness, material; and the type of exciter: hammer, nail, etc. In practice, all the physical elements that contribute to the generation of the sound itself. This system is particularly effective for producing sounds whose timbre varies in base to the dynamics of performance such as: acoustic guitars, electric guitars, harpsichords, Clavinets, harps, etc. difficult to reproduce with other generation systems. But STR-1 thanks to the extensive programming possibilities in addition to simulation offers the Sound Designer the possibility of synthesizing completely original sounds, a true futuristic Sound Engine.
