The original Signature Series 14”x08” HLD 590 cast bronze snare drum was introduced in 1987 and today's modern one was developed after careful research by many engineers and musicians.
The study concluded that the weight and stiffness of a snare drum shell have a significant impact on the vibration of the heads. The heavier and stiffer the shell, the more freedom the heads have to vibrate. As a result, the overall sound will be richer, more resonant, and have greater projection.
Because the cast bronze shell material offered more weight and rigidity than any other material used by SONOR at the time, the HLD 590 achieved unmatched purity, resonance, and projection. Combined with the golden appearance of the bronze shell and copper-plated hardware, it became the most luxurious and sought-after SONOR snare drum of its time, remaining one of the most sought-after collector's items to this day.
The original HLD 590 used a 3mm solid cast bronze shell with 2mm reinforcing rings, for a total thickness of 5mm on both edges of the snare. The center was later milled down to 3mm.
To date, SONOR has used the same shell construction for all of its cast bronze snare drums.
Therefore, the 14”x08” shell of this 150th Anniversary Signature Cast Bronze snare drum is an exact replica of the one used on the HLD 590.
However, this snare drum is not only a reissue of the 1980s original but is also an homage that blends tradition and innovation, combining a replica of the original cast bronze shell of the HLD 590 with cutting-edge contemporary hardware features.
All of the snare's hardware is plated in 24K gold to match the aesthetic of the original, while adding a slightly more luxurious touch to the overall aesthetic.
